Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley's Rausser College of Natural Resources is the oldest land-grant college in California and is home to top-ranked programs across the biological, ecological, economic, nutritional, and social sciences. Our 120 faculty, 2,500 undergraduates, and 400 graduate students advance our collective understanding of climate change; biodiversity loss; economic and social inequality; food and water security; nutrition and disease; energy technology and policy; and sustainable land management for the health of all people and the planet through world-class teaching, innovative and multidisciplinary research, and public outreach.

Rausser College is composed of five academic units (Agricultural and Resource Economics; Environmental Science, Policy, and Management; Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology; Plant and Microbial Biology; and Energy and Resources), and several research centers and facilities. A multi-unit Dean's Office provides administrative, student services, development, and IT support. The College is also known for its intellectual diversity, excellence in both foundational and translational research, commitment to scholarship that addresses justice and inequality and a community of students, faculty, staff and alumni committed to finding solutions to the most-challenging environmental and health issues facing the planet.

The Biological Imaging Facility seeks to hire a scientist to serve as an integral team member to care for 11 advanced microscope systems, various microtechnique instruments, and advanced imaging software. The candidate will provide basic and advanced microscope training, basic instrument maintenance, and scientific guidance and experiment design for the UC Berkeley research community. Special consideration will be given to applicants with a Ph.D in an appropriate scientific field and demonstrated core facility experience.

Responsibilities

• Consult with and advise students and faculty on research project feasibility.
• Train users in transmitted and fluorescent light microscopy techniques.
• Train users in sample prep as it applies to microscope imaging.
• Keep apprised of emergent imaging software and train users in the latest imaging software solutions.
• Train users in plant microtechnique and animal histology.
• Assist in annual equipment grant writing.
• Assist classes and workshops offered by BIF.
• Maintain facility infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated proficiency in all aspects of fluorescence microscopy, including widefield, confocal, and super-resolution.
• Sample preparation for microscopy.
• Microscope imaging problem solving.
• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

• Zeiss system knowledge.
• Proficiency in Bitplane's Imaris, SVI's Huygens, and BioVision's iVision.
• Transmitted light techniques such as brightfield, DIC, and phase contrast.
• Animal histology and plant microtechnique from fixation to embedding, sectioning, and staining.
• Ph.D. in biological sciences.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $68,549.75 (Step 1) - $72,739.62 (Step 4).
