Job Summary
Management of laboratory facilities for PI's research group. Lab specializes in stable isotope and paleoecological analysis of modern and fossil samples from a variety of environments. The successful candidate will be someone who can understand and engage in the scientific research of the group on one hand, while also managing day-to-day administrative and organizational tasks.
Essential Job Duties
Manages the operation and administration of PI's laboratory facilities: installs, calibrates, troubleshoots, and repairs equipment and instrumentation; schedules and works with outside technicians when required for installation, repairs, or upgrades.
Serves as lab safety officer, in charge of chemical hygiene and safety training, waste disposal, and maintaining PPE.
Maintains records of the use, calibration, and repair of analytical instrumentation.
Contributes to the design and modification of experimental techniques, equipment, and procedures; documents and communicates these procedures in written and electronic formats.
Trains and supervises new users in the use of experimental techniques and analytical instrumentation.
Administers purchase of equipment and supplies; maintains contact with vendors and conducts product searches to determine availability and cost of equipment/parts; assists in forecasting and planning for future equipment/resource needs.
Coordinates resources, budgets, and schedules to optimize research efficiency.
Processes and analyzes samples for the PI and outside collaborators.
Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
B.S. degree or higher in a STEM field (preferably Chemistry, Biochemistry, Earth Science, Biology or related discipline).
1 year of experience working in an IRMS laboratory.
Basic knowledge of stable isotope geochemistry. Keen interest in the field.
Aptitude for troubleshooting and fixing equipment and instrumentation; capable of basic laboratory chemical work; quantitative data analysis.
Ability to work well with others; highly organized.
Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in analytical chemistry and/or isotope geochemistry.
At least 2 years in a mass spectrometry (especially IRMS) laboratory.
Prior experience making stable isotope measurements (e.g., bulk, compound specific, clumped isotopes). Ability to operate and repair IRMS instruments and peripherals (e.g., GC, gas bench, EA, etc.), organic extractions and sample cleanup.
