STEAMFITTER (Steamfitter)
Department Description
JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Steam Shop Supervisor provide journey-level experience to:
POSITION INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Climb ladders, on top of machinery and equipment, crawl, stoop, bend and work in confined spaces such as attics and sewer manholes.
- Lift and maneuver up to 50lbs; items such as large pipe wrenches, sewer cable, sewer cleaning equipment, large pipes, pumps, toilets and sinks.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License. This position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.
- This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
- This position is subject to completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services at no charge to the applicant.
- Work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include but are not limited to: asbestos, PCB's radioactive materials, industrial and laboratory chemicals, fuels, solvents, infectious materials and wastes, biological hazards and other materials labeled hazardous.
- Requires use of respirator and protective clothing.
- Work a non-standard work schedule that includes nights, weekends, or alternative schedules such as 80 hours in 8 or 9 shifts instead of 10.
- Supports critical campus functions operating 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
- Required to participate in an on call' program to facilitate timely return of staff to the campus as required to meet critical needs. The on call program requires employee to inform the University how they can be reached during non-working hours, to carry University provided radios, cell phones, pagers or other telecommunications equipment which would facilitate communication between the campus and employee during non-work hours, or to accept rotating on-call responsibility which could periodically restrict the off-campus movements of the employee.
- If the employee's non-working hour movements are restricted by the University, employees will be compensated for their On-Call' time according to the established on call rates. If actually called into work, the employee will be compensated according to the established campus policies.
- May also be required to return after an assigned shift due to business necessity or emergencies. Compensation for Call-Back' will be in accordance with campus policies.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Additional Minimum License/Certification
- Must possess a certificate of completion from a recognized union apprenticeship program, University apprenticeship program, accredited trade school or have the equivalent amount of experience and training comparable to a journey level craftsperson in the plumbing/steam trade.
- Non-certified applicants will have their training and experience evaluated by members of Facilities Services Senior Leadership Group.
Minimum Education/Experience
- Journey level experience in the Plumbing/Steam trade and related practices to perform assigned duties without direct supervision.
- Experience to inspect and perform preventive maintenance program on Steam/Plumbing and other campus systems related to craft functions.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)
- Skill to fabricate, maintain, service, repair, replace, install and/or alter Steam equipment (construction, maintenance, alarms) and other campus systems related to craft function.
- Skill to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems.
Preferred:
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)
- Ability to gain access to small/tight areas and ability to work or maneuver around obstacles that requires stairs and ladders; ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
- Skill to:
- Repair, replace and test boilers. Includes all piping, gas valves, low water and make up valves.
- Replacement of controls and failed components.
- Troubleshoot, repair, or replace heat exchangers and their components for heating hot water, industrial hot water, and domestic hot water systems and replacement of heating and cooling coils. Repair and replacement of all control valves and diaphragms over one inch in diameter.
- Repair or replace radiators, convectors and baseboard heaters, heating and cooling coils and the Repair, replace and when necessary, adjust controls, for heating hot water, industrial hot water, and domestic hot water heat exchangers.
- Installation of hard pipe pneumatic control lines for new and existing control systems.
- Repair or replace pneumatic diaphragms.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain air compressors, vacuum pumps, and air driers.
- Repair and replacement of low, medium, and high-pressure steam lines, strainers, and steam traps condensate lines, heating hot water lines and chilled water lines. Repair and replace pressure reducing stations and their components on steam, air, and water lines in buildings.
- Repair, replacement, and coordination of maintenance for autoclaves, dishwashers, cage washers, all related piping, valves, and steam traps. Repair and replace hard piped air lines, valves and pressure switches on compressors and vacuum pumps.
- Ability to work with a fitted work respirator as required.
- Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to interact in a positive manner with campus community, including students, building managers, academic personnel, and craft personnel, in a multi-cultural environment.
- Ability to track jobs to completion and prioritize requirements; able to work and support shutdowns and project schedules to minimize interference with others. Must be able to read information from equipment manufacturers' manuals, service requests, layout sketches, blueprints, appropriate state and local government codes, trade-specific manuals and practices, and to determine how the fixture or equipment should perform.
- Knowledge of relevant building codes and regulations.
- Ability to communicate clearly over the telephone and two-way radio. Ability to execute all job assignments in a timely manner.
- Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions.
