The NYU Department of Environmental Studies is seeking a postdoctoral associate for a project investigating how and to what extent land use and management can serve climate change mitigation and adaptation. This may include investigating the regional contributions of varied agricultural management systems; projects relating to reforestation, afforestation and/or avoided deforestation; and other related interventions and approaches. This project will assess these strategies' carbon sequestration potentials (e.g. additivity) and viability (e.g. permanence, reversibility), particularly in the context of changing climate variability and extremes. Moving beyond carbon, this project will also seek to quantify the associated co-benefits and trade-offs across other environmental and ecological axes (e.g. hydrology, biodiversity, etc.).
The initial appointment is for one year, with a renewal for a second year. The successful candidate will be based in the growing Dept. of Environmental Studies at NYU's Washington Square campus in New York City. The appointment will provide ample opportunity to engage with the highly interdisciplinary department faculty and our growing focus area on land systems, including natural and social science dimensions. The postdoctoral associate will also have the opportunity to directly collaborate with researchers at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and National Center for Atmospheric Research/Colorado State University, including using outputs from state-of-the-art ecosystem and climate models, and with projects/activities conducted by the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project.
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $63,000-$73,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. by the time of the appointment in climate science, terrestrial and/or agroecosystem biogeochemistry, or a relevant field. Candidates with familiarity and proficiency in climate and land surface/ecosystem modeling, agroecosystem modeling, and/or using remote sensing products to study terrestrial biogeochemical cycling are highly preferred.
