About the Department
The University of Cincinnati Department of Geosciences' teaching and research programs integrate field, laboratory, and quantitative approaches to solve problems at the nexus of water, climate, rock, and life. The Department has three other staff members, 13 faculty, both M.S. and Ph.D. students, and over $2M in current external funding. Current analytical instrumentation includes isotope ratio mass spectrometry, gas chromatography mass spectrometry, optical emission spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray florescence, elemental analyzers, environmental sensors (field and lab based), and ground-penetrating radar. The position will include opportunities for collaborating in research with faculty and students, work in the field, and development of new analytical procedures and systems.
Job Overview
Plan and execute the design and maintenance of new and existing scientific instrumentation for use in lab research and/or instruction.
Essential Functions
- Plan and execute the design and maintenance of new and existing scientific instrumentation for use in lab research and/or instruction
- Develop the design for new or modified electronic/mechanical/optical instrumentation and direct the purchase of necessary components to implement design.
- Coordinate fabrication of scientific instrumentation.
- Participate in, or oversee the installation and maintenance of new, modified, and/or existing scientific instrumentation.
- Maintains records of the use, calibration, and repair of analytical instrumentation.
- Contributes to the design and modification of experimental techniques, equipment, and procedures; documents and communicates these procedures in written and electronic formats.
- Trains new users (including students) in the use of experimental techniques and analytical instrumentation.
- Administers purchase of equipment and supplies related to this position; maintains contact with vendors and conducts product searches to determine availability and cost of equipment/parts; assists in forecasting and planning for future equipment/resource needs.
- Maintain inventory of electronic/mechanical/optical equipment and requestion and/or fabricate replacement parts as necessary.
- Perform related duties based on departmental need.
Required Education
- Bachelor's Degree
- Six (6) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
Required Experience
Two (2) years of experience in design and/or service of instrumentation.
Additional Qualifications Considered
- B.S or higher degree (M.S. and/or Ph.D.) in the Geosciences or closely related field.
- Working with and training students in the use of analytical equipment.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
- Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
