Classification Concept Positions are responsible for the diagnoses of mechanical problems and for the repair, maintenance and overhaul of vehicles and other power equipment.
This position is at the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Minnesota St. Paul Campus. One hundred eighty acres of land is uniquely situated in a major metropolitan area for conducting outdoor field research. The fields provide a critical extension of classroom and laboratories for research and teaching. The Ag Services Department is responsible for managing this resource. This position serves a vital part of the research performed on the station.

Perform Mechanical Work on Ag. Experiment Station Research Equipment and Vehicles: 55% -Repairing and fabricating specialized agricultural research equipment is a large portion of this position. -Inspects, repairs, and adjusts automotive and farm tractor systems such as: fuel injection, electrical, exhaust, carburetor, hydraulic, and lubrication systems. -May use various computerized equipment for diagnostics tests on automotive and other equipment. -Replace, repair and adjust components to include: ignitions, brakes, brake pads, shoes, drums, rotors, hoses, lights, tires, tailgates, lifts, etc. -Operates equipment necessary to repair, replace and overhaul equipment (drill press, hoists, jacks, compressors, lathes etc). Position drills, welds and grinds to modify and fabricate parts. -May repair motors and small engines: chain saws, trimmers, mowers, sprayers, blowers etc.
Clerical Work Including: 25% -Ordering parts and fluids, such as hydraulic fluid, oil, DEF and antifreeze. -Opening and closing work orders, keeping inventory in database for billing purposes, and filing receipts. -Keep maintenance records. Know and understand Department of Transportation Inspection rules and record-keeping needs. -Keep track of generated waste products, including oil, oil, and hydraulic filters, tires, and batteries.
Scheduling with Customers, 10% -Discussing repair and fabrication details. -Assisting/training on proper operations of equipment.
Allocating, Assigning, and Reviewing Work Performed by Other Personnel in the Shop, 5%
Cleaning and Organizing the Shop, 5%
Required Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent and two years of vocational education in automotive mechanics and one year of experience in diagnosing, repairing and maintaining vehicles and general equipment.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience operating, maintaining, and repairing farm equipment.
