Job Summary: | About the Certification Specialist Role: This role is part of a team that works collaboratively and troubleshoots technical problems with regularity. It is not expected that the incumbent will be an expert in this field immediately upon hire; focused technical training will be provided.
Under the direction of the Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) Field Supervisor, the Certification Specialist provides the repairs, maintenance, and certification in research laboratories, including but not limited to biological safety cabinets, fume hoods and HEPA filtration systems.
A Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) serves as the primary means to protect the laboratory worker and the surrounding environment from pathogens. All exhaust air is HEPA-filtered as it exits the biosafety cabinet, removing harmful bacteria and viruses. BSCs are designed to provide personnel, environmental and product protection when appropriate practices and procedures are followed.
This position will work collaboratively with the team of Certification Specialists. In addition, the Certification Specialist will work with colleagues in the Department of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS), Physical Plant, and lab managers among others on campus.
About the Department of Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS): Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) provides guidance, technical consultations, and expertise to the campus community in the areas of biological, chemical, environmental, engineering, radiation, and fire safety.
About the Division of Facilities, Planning, and Management: The Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus in support of the university's education, research, and outreach activities. FP&M works behind the scenes to coordinate campus planning, manage design and construction, maintain and operate buildings and grounds, supply utility services, ensure health and safety, and provide parking and transportation services. |
Responsibilities: | Identifies and develops plans to address safety issues, provides consultation, and tracks and manages cases in a specific area of specialty so all work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance will all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Makes recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assesses hazards using relevant regulatory methodologies. - 5% Secures resources and schedules logistics for a safety program
- 5% Identifies operational and safety issues and develops improvement plans and standard operating procedures
- 50% Provides knowledge and guidance to internal and external stakeholders including leadership, in a specialized area of safety such biosafety, chemical, hazardous materials, agriculture, lake, radiation, and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
- 5% Directs logistical activities, allocates resources and investigates components of specific health and safety cases
- 10% Communicates findings to necessary stakeholders
- 5% Reviews industry updates and may assist in developing safety communication materials based on industry changes
- 20% Perform annual BSC certifications to current NSF 49 Standard, annual certification to Laminar Clean Bench, cage racks and HEPA filtered equipment and systems. Gas decontaminations with chlorine dioxide. Ensure the health and safety of laboratories

Qualifications: | - Experience in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical or other trades-type work. Experience with lab equipment and repairs will also qualify. This experience does not need to be extensive. - Desire to learn, problem solve, and think critically - Collaborate effectively by: contributing positively to the success of the team; treating other with respect, courtesy, and professionalism |

Salary: | Minimum $60,000 ANNUAL (12 months) Depending on Qualifications
The minimum salary for this position is $60,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
