Painter Temporary
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Possess an expertise with painting methods, techniques and materials on a variety of substrates and surfaces. A valid California driving license is necessary. Knowledge of safe work practices, hand paint and spray paint buildings, areas, equipment and furniture.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Hand-paint and spray-paint buildings, areas, equipment and fixed furniture. Use paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces. Trimmings, fixtures and campus structures. Prepare surfaces and apply decorative or protective coverings. Perform minor maintenance and repairs. Supervise temporary crew of painters when needed.
Apply coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer to decorate and protect interior and exterior components denoted in item #1 above, using brushes, spray gun or paint roller.
Prepare surfaces using sandpaper, brushes, or steel wool, and remove old paint from surfaces using paint remover, scraper, and wire brush. Repair nail holes, cracks and joints with putty plaster or other filler. Tape and apply plaster to dry wall.
Work with campus paint supplier to select premixed paints or prepare paint to match specified colors by mixing required proportions of pigment, oil and thinning or drying substances.
Document and keep records of ALL paint used by Pitzer Facilities on campus to be in compliance with SCAQMD regulations.
Hang wallpaper and other decorative or protective coverings.
Supervise a crew of contracted painters engaged in the painting of campus facilities, during periods when student rooms are vacant.
Perform minor maintenance, repairs, renovations and minor new construction work.
Must wear and carry a radio during the performance of duties.
Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to the position.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Possess an expertise with painting methods, techniques and materials on a variety of substrates and surfaces.
Strong ability to follow and provide written and oral instructions in English.
Knowledge of safe work practices relevant to position. Actively promotes and personally observes safety and security procedures, and uses equipment and materials properly.
Have the ability to supervise a painting crew at various times and work independently.
Customer service focused, with the ability to provide the highest quality service to all customers at all times in an environment with a heavy workload and frequent interruptions.
Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness, and monitors own work and that of assigned crew to ensure quality.
Ability to work and interact productively and cordially with a diverse community of staff, contractors, students, faculty and guests.
Effective and efficient organizational and leadership skills to coordinate efforts with painting crews.
Work effectively and productively as part of a team and independently, with minimal supervision.
Basic Qualifications: High School diploma or any combination or education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have four to five years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Professional development certifications relevant to this position are preferred.
Licenses/Certifications: Must have a valid driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the College’s automobile insurer. Professional development certifications relevant to this position are preferred.
Physical Requirements: This is a very active position.
Must be able to stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, stoop, twist, stretch, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds from ground to waist level without assistance.
Must be able to work on feet for prolonged periods of time.
Must be able to work from an elevated platform (ladder, scaffold).
Must have manual ability and dexterity to grasp and grip work tools and equipment safely.
Must have high energy and stamina to keep up with a fast-paced, time-sensitive and heavy workload.
Supervisory Responsibility: Will supervise a crew of contracted painters at various times for different projects.
Work Model: This is a temporary, full time, staff position working 40 hours per week. The regular hours for this position are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm with a 30-minute meal break, Monday through Friday. Overtime hours may be required as needed. These hours may vary due to needs of the College or department.
Anticipated Starting Rate: $21.00 per hour
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity
Other Requirements: Will be issued and required to wear a uniform while performing work.
Physical Test Requirement: This position requires satisfactory results on a post-offer physical test at a clinic.
