Manage University of Chicago Energy Management Program (20%)
Develop, implement and manage the Universityâ™s Energy Management Program that includes eliminating energy waste and improving energy efficiency per the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Plan FY2023 â“ FY2030
Develop and ensure the regular tracking of appropriate information using the energy management information system to support necessary reporting and continuous improvement to the energy management program
Develop systems and processes to support energy conservation efforts by measuring pre and post project energy consumption, M&V
Collaborate with other Facilities Services Units on energy conservation initiatives and energy management issues
Monitor federal, state, and local utilities incentive programs and apply those programs at the University if deemed cost effective.
Monitor the Universityâ™s energy usage through benchmarking and utility analysis
Manage the Universityâ™s ENERGY STARÂ® partnership and commitment to the DOEâ™s Better Climate Challenge.
Manage the Universityâ™s compliance with the City of Chicagoâ™s Energy Benchmarking Ordinance using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.
Collaboratively develop preventative maintenance based existing building commissioning program (PM+Cx)
Develop project planning sheet and progress tracking. Provide monthly reporting on the energy program.
Develop energy program goals for each FY consistent with the 50% greenhouse gas emissions reduction plan.
Develop a SmartLabs program and support the SmartLabs coordinator residing within the Office of Research Safety to maintain laboratory safety and minimize the carbon footprint of laboratory buildings on campus.
Implement Continuous Commissioning Â and Deep Energy Retrofit Projects (80%)
Lead the development of projects and practices necessary to reduce campus energy use intensity by 20% by 2030.
Implement retro-commissioning and continuous commissioning in selected buildings to reduce energy and cost consumption and improve occupant comfort
Identify and implement in-scope preventative maintenance
Identify and resolve in-scope deferred maintenance
Energy Projects â“ identify and implement capital energy projects as identified in the 50% greenhouse gas emissions reduction plan in the areas of:
Laboratory energy retrofits
Campus-wide LED lighting retrofits
Air handling unit retrofits
HVAC controls upgrades
Chilled water and steam plant optimization
Compressed air optimization
Plug load management
Energy Projects â“ perform necessary reporting and M&V
Provide technical expertise to Facilities Services in identifying and ultimate implementation of operational performance improvements. Work with a team of in-house engineers, mechanics, controls technicians, etc. to retro-commission various HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and controls systems.
Oversee all aspects of energy projects from initial identification and study through construction completion and closeout. Work with and manage a team of design consultants, cost estimators, architects, commissioning authorities, contractors, etc.
Provides professional energy engineering support in development and implementation of capital improvement projects, such as construction, remodeling, renovation, and maintenance of buildings and facilities.
Researches, designs, develops, tests, evaluates, and installs structures, systems, equipment, and/or components. Analyzes and develops solutions to technical problems and conducts tests to maintain quality. Performs development activities including drawing board layout and interpretation and implementation of project specifications and documentation requirements.
Performs other related work as needed.
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Energy Management.
Seven years relevant experience in facilities management, energy management, or equivalent field.
Experience in analyzing building and system energy consumption patterns to identify energy conservation and efficiency improvement opportunities, appropriate technology applications and likely project cost and energy saving forecasts.
Experience in a customer-oriented environment.
Hands-on experience with and knowledge of computerized building automation, lighting controls and energy management systems.
Working in an institution of higher education.
Experience resolving building issues utilizing root cause analysis/building forensics.
Licenses and Certifications:
Current certification as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Professional Engineer (PE).
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
Computer proficiency in Word, Excel, and Microsoft Project.
Understand complex interrelationships between multiple electrical, mechanical and controls based systems.
Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail in a fast paced environment of changing priorities.
Ability to handle ambiguity and exert informal authority.
Skill to effectively communicate orally, in writing and electronically.
