The mission of the Natural Reserve System is to contribute to the understanding and wise management of the Earth and its natural systems by supporting university-level teaching, research, and public service at protected natural areas throughout California. Our primary role is to support students, teachers, and faculty in research and educational endevours on natural lands. We provide a variety of support functions iuncluding ono-on-one student mentorship, collaborating with private and public entities, on-the-ground stewardship, facility upkeek, course support and teaching.
We are hiring a reserve director to support and implement teaching, research, and stewardship activities on lands located throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains in Santa Cruz, CA. The position will be responsble for a variety of activities including performing on-the-ground stewardship (e.g. invasive species control), mentoring a team of undergraduates conducting field research, facilitating class and research use, assisting and occassionally leading flora, fauna, and water monitoring efforts, overseeing and managing budgets and part-time employees, working with team members on fundraising efforts, and preparing reports and other presentations for public and private partners. The succesful candidate will report to the UC Santa Cruz Natural Reserves Administrative Director and work closely with faculty and staff members. Unlike other UC Natural Reserves that are tied to specific sites, work will occur on several private and public partner properties throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains. The position will be located in Satna Cruz, CA at UC Santa Cruz and work closely with local and regional partners. We are looking for someone who can wear many hats on a day to day basis (e.g. hard working field biologist, public speaker, mentor, etc.), has experience with, and a passion for, mentoring undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds, and is experienced with leading Diversity, Equity, Justice, and Inclusion efforts. The majority of the work will be in the field; however, office work and related tasks will also be required. This position requires someone who can work effectively with diverse stakeholder groups in a cohesive, efficient, and productive manner. Strong interpersonal, communication (writing and speaking), and mentorship skills are essential.
Salary Information: Salary Range: $60,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Mentors students, interns, classes, and researchers from a diversity of backgrounds in the field as well as with written projects (e.g. map creation, resumes, presentations, research papers, data collection).
Supports projects for classes, faculty, and other members of the public. Create and maintain relationships with local private, public, and community groups. Enhance research and education on the reserve by networking and contacting potential reserve users, including: faculty, staff, researchers, and students. Assist researchers and students in planning, designing, and implementing research and educational opportunities.
Ensures infrastructure and required field research commodities (e.g. field camp equipment) and other materials support teaching, research, and stewardship goals are created and maintained. Define, identify, and locate study sites suited to specific project needs, establish study plots, orient faculty and students to the natural areas of the reserve, support field classes on the reserve. Prepare and/or update interpretive and outreach materials, including web pages, signs, and posters, brochures, and species lists. Be available for emergencies and aware of appropriate emergency procedures.
Develops, leads, and assesses (e.g. data summary and report writing) procedures for remote field sites and / or research studies with a focus on building and maintaining best practices for supporting diverse DEIJ efforts.
Participates in training activities related to teaching, research, monitoring, safety.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Experience working in a field setting conducting research and/or teaching activities.
Advanced knowledge of research and teaching operations being conducted at field/remote sites.
Background in natural sciences and/or ability to identify California flora and fauna.
Expereince working with students/people/communities from marginalized backgrounds.
Ability to work independently and with a team, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

Experience with GIS, Adobe software suite, website design, and social media.
Experience using power tools (e.g. chainsaw, drill) and with basic carpentry (e.g. building a picnic table).
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
Selected candidate much be comfortable working in adverse weather conditions.
Ability to work an irregular schedule that is dependent on weather and research/teaching schedules.
