The Department of Radiation Oncology has an outstanding opportunity for an Engineering Technician 1. This position assists engineering staff in the maintenance, operations, and research conducted at the UW Medical Cyclotron Facility (UWMCF), a patient treatment and research facility of the UW School of Medicine, Department of Radiation Oncology. This facility centers around a one-of-a-kind particle accelerator with only a few similar units worldwide and supports a variety of clinical, research, and commercial programs.
Together with the Engineering Staff, the successful candidate will provide operations coverage throughout the daily operational schedule. This includes starting the accelerator in the morning, performing the morning dosimetry check, monitoring the performance of the system throughout the day, making minor adjustments, and taking care of routine and/or repetitive operational problems. Other operational duties include changing the machine settings to produce radioisotopes and support other activities as required by the operating schedule. With guidance from the Engineering Staff, the successful candidate will perform preventive maintenance tasks and maintain the stock of electronic and mechanical spare parts (monitoring of inventory, ordering of parts).
Under supervision of the engineering staff, the successful candidate will perform maintenance tasks and construct, repair, modify, and test equipment, providing drawings and other equipment documentation as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES: •Operate the Clinical Cyclotron System during routine daily use: Start the equipment, tune the cyclotron and beam lines, perform calibrations, monitor equipment operation, respond to routine problems, shut-down the system. •Maintain spart parts stock: Track part volumes, identify parts required, identify vendors, order parts, keep parts organized, obtain data for parts, maintain data sheets for parts, report difficulties with parts to a Research Engineer. •Prepare equipment for shipment to vendors for repair or calibration. •Perform preventive maintenance tasks on the system based on checklists and standard operating procedures: check and replace light bulbs, check oil levels, align equipment, measure temperatures, check the function of interlock switches, record operating parameters, and correct or report problems found during these checks. •Under supervision of a Research Engineer, perform maintenance and repair work such as ion source cleaning, the disassembly, repair and re-assembly of mechanical parts, and take measurements with a variety of instruments. •Solder and test electronic circuit cards. •Construct or modify mechanical and electronic equipment. •Make wire harnesses and electronic enclosures. •Make custom copper, stainless steel, and rubber tubing. •Clean up equipment and technical areas. •Maintain logs, prepare simple reports. •Communicate with medical staff and other users regarding the status of the system and scheduling. •Prepare drawings and other documentation under engineering staff direction and supervision, using computer drafting software. •Make sketches for simple mechanical parts to be made by on-campus shops. Fabricate simple parts using workshop tools such as a drill press, lathe, milling machine and various power tools. •Take care of radioactive waste and other hazardous waste under supervision of a engineering staff. •Order the necessary supplies (LSA boxes, bags, etc.). •Distribute and collect radiation badges. •Maintain inventory of hazardous materials and MSDS sheets. •Assist engineering staff in trouble-shooting tasks. •Work with radioactive components, high voltage systems, heavy mechanical assemblies, hoists etc. •Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Three years of experience as an electronics technician, instrument maker, or engineering assistant. Related course work or technical school training may substitute year-for-year for up to two years of work experience. OR One year of experience as an Electronics Technician 1
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Radiation Exposure: Duties required by this position description will result in exposure to ionizing radiation. This exposure will be monitored and will be kept within all applicable legal limits.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to lift 50 lbs. Able to work on ladders and elevated structures.
Working Hours •The UWMCF requires operator coverage from 06:00 to 18:30, Monday through Friday. The person in this position will alternate between a morning shift from 06:00 to 14:30 and a late shift from 10:00 to 18:30 as required by Engineering Staff (time includes a 30 min. lunch break). If coverage is not required for the full time period, the working time can be adjusted accordingly. •Overtime outside these hours is occasionally required in case of equipment problems, to provide special coverage for a patient treatment or to deliver isotope production beams in the evening or on weekends.
Supervision Received •The person in this position reports to the Facility Operations Engineer. For specific tasks, the supervision may be provided by other Engineers.
