Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Energy Geosciences Division has an opening for a BES Geoscience Postdoc to join the team.
The Fundamental Geosciences group at LBNL is conducting a broad search for postdoctoral scholars with expertise in any experimental, modeling or theoretical methods applicable to the study of the formation, evolution and use of sedimentary rock formations. The overarching goal of our research is to establish mechanistic descriptions of the chemical-mechanical processes, such as diagenesis and deformation, that governed the changes in sedimentary rock over geologic time and that determine how sedimentary systems may be used sustainably today for their energy, water and mineral resources.

Our group provides an exciting, multidisciplinary environment in which complementary, cutting-edge experimental and modeling approaches are used to address complex geologic systems and problems. Our investigators are experts in a broad range of geoscience fields and methods. Successful applicants can expect to have a lead mentor and to conduct research within one of the project topic areas.
What You Will Do:
Perform basic research (experiment, simulation or theory) on to elucidate the mechanisms of chemical-mechanical processes in carbonate or clay rich sedimentary rock.
Provide disciplinary expertise in relevant field such as interfacial geochemistry, isotope geochemistry, geomechanics, geophysics or related area.
Contribute or learn technical expertise with relevant methods such as electron or X-ray microscopy and tomography, isotopic methods, laboratory geomechanics, advanced molecular simulation, non-equilibrium thermodynamic theory or other approach applicable to the research problems.
Contribute to the development of conceptual and quantitative models for the coupling of stress and chemical reaction at the scales of individual interfaces, laboratory columns or sedimentary formations.
Work creatively, independently, and productively.
Work as a member of a large multidisciplinary research team.
Publish peer-reviewed journal articles and present work at scientific conferences.
Contribute to progress reports and team deliverables.
What is Required:
Ph.D. in Earth science, chemistry, materials science or relevant STEM field.
Demonstrated ability to perform research that answers mechanistic questions in geologic, materials, chemical systems.
Ability to work creatively, independently, and productively.
Ability to work as a member of a large multidisciplinary research team.
Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
Record of timely publications.

This is a full-time 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
