Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Field Researcher III for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS)- Adelphia Research Farm. This position reports to the Research Farm Manager at the 200-acre Rutgers Adelphia Plant Science Research & Extension Farm located in Freehold, NJ. The position supervises, leads and trains all Class 1 (full time), Class 4 (seasonal/casual), and Class 5 (student hourly) research farm staff in the various field operations of a highly efficient and premier income-producing breeding program in turfgrass and switchgrass.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Leads in facilitating and maintaining research protocols as per faculty project leaders' instructions by effectively scheduling personnel, equipment and operations in a timely manner.
Assists the research farm staff in their assigned duties, and if necessary, works beyond normal hours to accomplish project goals in a timely and successful manner through the vagaries of weather, personnel shortages, equipment failures and other impediments that may occur during the normal workweek.
Responsible to ensure the applications of all inputs required to continue the health and growth of turfgrass and switchgrass plants are completed in the research trials as prescribed.
Responsible for maintaining the fleet of equipment needed for turf mowing, field tillage, soil preparation, applications of agronomic plant and soil inputs.
Works independently in the field, lead the group of Research farm staff and be able to perform in the capacity as an assistant to the Farm Manager, assuming those duties during the absence of said manager.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
A minimum of two years of experience in an agricultural research farm setting working with perennial grasses.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience leading a group of technicians in the daily operations of a research facility and able to train all subordinates in the duties of farm operations, including but not limited to, farm and professional turf equipment operation and maintenance/repair, irrigation design and repair, irrigation pump and system components operation, identification of turf species, weeds, diseases, insects and their control measures.
Knowledge of the applicable regulations that are established by the Federal and State governments related to the operation of the research farm.
The position requires good communication and interpersonal skills which include the ability to work with individuals in the research farm organization as well as those who may work outside the organization and perform services and do business with the farm operation.
Capable of having multiple strategies planned and ready for daily field operations since weather and field conditions can change rapidly.
Good communication skills between research staff members are crucial to convey an alternative plan of action while still maintaining the regularly scheduled maintenance of the research program.
Training and communicating with farm research personnel is imperative to maintaining the operation cohesiveness and consistency while still accommodating researchers' project protocols and requirements.
Ability to operate and communicate using email on a personal computer with Microsoft OS's which run MS WORD, MS EXCEL, and MS OUTLOOK as well as working with the browsers including Google Chrome and Firefox.
Skills to lead and direct staff in the field operations of the research farm, collaborate with the Farm Manager and Project Leaders as well as schedule and prioritize resources to efficiently complete the work requests in a timely manner.
Possesses good verbal/written communication skills to direct personnel in the execution of their work assignments as prescribed by the Farm Manager or Project Leader.
Ability to work alone or supervise a group of staff in the absence of the Farm Manager.
University vehicle supplied by the Farm Manager; a valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Bachelor of Science in Plant Sciences or related agricultural fields that encompass a combination of turfgrass science, agronomy, and 7-10 years technical experience in a University research farm operation that includes the ability to lead a group of technicians in the performance of their duties.
Ability to operate and maintain all farm operation systems including but not limited to farm tillage/turfgrass equipment, irrigation systems and components, application equipment and other miscellaneous equipment inherent in the operation of the facility.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds and work under multiple weather conditions (including weather extremes) that include strenuous labor, dirty and dusty conditions.
Individual must not have serious allergies to plant pollen, dust, mold spores, turf/crop related pesticides and other naturally occurring substances that are unavoidable in an outside work environment scenario.
Schedule may necessitate work outside normal working hours and/or weekends depending on weather conditions and project deadlines.
This position will require the individual to work outside the regular workday schedule, i.e. early in the morning and after the normal business day has concluded which includes weekends to perform field duties that have been precluded by weather or personnel availability.
Two years of driving experience and a valid NJ State Driver's License is required.
Must obtain and/or possess a NJDEP Pesticide Applicator's License in Category 1A or 3B as well as a NJ ProFACT Fertilizer Applicator's Certificate
