Dept Marketing Statement Ecologically diverse and physically spectacular, the University of California Natural Reserve System (NRS) is a unique assemblage of 41 protected wild land sites throughout California. The reserves encompass nearly all of the state's major ecosystems, preserved in as undisturbed a condition as possible to support University-level research, teaching, and public service and outreach programs. The NRS is a Trustee Agency under the California Environmental Quality Act, and UC manages the NRS resources in the Public Trust.
The five Natural Reserve sites that form the UC Santa Cruz unit are spread along 60 miles of the central coast: Ano Nuevo Island Reserve (25 acres), Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve (4,200 acres), Fort Ord Natural Reserve (606 acres), Younger Lagoon Reserve (72 acres), and the UCSC Campus Natural Reserve (400 acres). Each reserve has unique research and teaching opportunities, physical conditions and constraints, regional and local political considerations, and funding and administration issues.
The Younger Lagoon Reserve is located on the open coast near Monterey Bay at the western edge of the City of Santa Cruz, California. It is adjacent to the UC Santa Cruz Long Marine Lab. Younger Lagoon Reserve was established in 1986 because of its unique flora, fauna and coastal lagoon. Since the establishment of Younger Lagoon Reserve, UCSC has acquired properties to the north and east of the lagoon and has developed a world class Coastal Science Campus on the site. As a condition for approval of UCSC's Coastal Long Range Development Plan (CLRDP), the California Coastal Commission (CCC) required that UC Santa Cruz set aside for permanent protection approximately 47 acres of the 100 acre site. These lands are to be permanently protected, enhanced, restored, and maintained as high quality natural areas and open space. UC Santa Cruz Campus Administration and the UC Santa Cruz Natural Reserves met the CCC's requirements by incorporating these lands into the original 25-acre Younger Lagoon Reserve in 2009. The expanded Younger Lagoon Reserve (72 acres) includes the coastal lagoon, beach, coastal bluffs, coastal terrace grassland and scrub, and delineated wetlands. The expanded Younger Lagoon Reserve is managed by the UC Santa Cruz Natural Reserves in accordance with the CLRDP. In addition to its resource protection and restoration mandates, the CLRDP requires enhanced public access/education opportunities on the site, and includes extensive monitoring and reporting requirements.
Under the direction of and in collaboration with the Younger Lagoon Reserve Director, the selected candidate will serve as a Research, Education, Outreach, and Restoration Steward for the University of California Santa Cruz Younger Lagoon Reserve. Conduct field stewardship and biological monitoring, support educational, research, and outreach, and support restoration and propagation. Support teaching, research, monitoring and public service efforts such as, but not limited to, student internships, educational walks, and public tours. Assist with the recruitment, supervision, and training of student interns, student field assistants, and volunteers. Assess the physical needs of the reserve on a regular basis, documenting problems to be addressed (invasive species, evidence of trespass, dumping, erosion problems, etc.) and, to the extent possible, enforce reserve rules and policies.
Maintain reserve work-logs. Collect and enter field data from monitoring surveys (e.g. Excel, ArcGIS Collector). Maintain databases and/or logbooks of land condictiones such as weed infestations, seed collection sites, erosion, vandalism, research plots, restoration sites, etc. Assist with the management of digital photos and reserve social media accounts. Assist with the preparation and summary of data for annual reports.
Job responsibilities and the proportion of time for each duty outlined here represent an overview of the needs, skills, and requirements of this position. Day to day duties will vary depending upon priorities as identified by the NRS Administrative Director and the Younger Lagoon Reserve Director.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule Salary Information: Salary Range: $18.06 - $24.00/hour. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Duties 25% - Performs on-the-ground native habitat restoration efforts including seed collection, propagation, weeding, planting, and irrigation.
25% - Performs general land stewardship and maintenance activities including trail maintenance, invasive species removal, and vegetation control.
20% - Supports on-the-ground education efforts such as class visits and for-credit internships. Leads student interns, field assistants, volunteer work crews, and outreach tours.
20% - Applies learned skills to assess and monitor policies and procedures for remote field sites and / or studies, such as assisting in flora and fauna monitoring efforts, maintiaing and implementing research (planting, maintaining experimental plots and equipment, etc.).
5% - Works with project leaders to coordinate research activities, procurement and operation of instrumentation, infrastructure and required field research commodities.
5% - Responsible for study documentation, logs, and reports. Contributes to manuscripts and presentations.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Working knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to conducting field research.
Working knowledge of native habitat restoration and/or biological monitoring.
Working knowledge of flora and fauna identification including dichotomous keys.
Demonstrates ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with local stakeholders.
Demonstrates ability to work with a team, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
Demonstrates attention to detail and organizational skills.
Demonstrates ability to work in in rapidly changing field conditions and in the office.
Proficient biological monitoring skills (e.g. transect/quadrat surveys, avian point counts, small mammal trapping, etc.).
Experience with computers and mainstream software (MS Office, Google Suite, etc.).
Experience with, and ability to perform, basic carpentry and land management skills (use of saw, shovel, rake, hammer, drill, etc.)
Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with staff, faculty, students, and the public, and to represent UC Santa Cruz Campus and the Natural Reserves accurately and professionally.
Demonstrated experience supervising diverse groups of student interns and/or volunteer groups.
