Operates equipment and performs manual labor necessary to maintain vegetation, in green infrastructure features, recreational features, and hardscape features; to ensure the enjoyment and safety of the public on San Antonio River Authority property.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Maintains a cooperative relationship with governmental agencies, adjoining property owners, the public, and specifically out-of-town visitors to River Authority managed properties to ensure the public’s safety and enjoyment of their time in the area.
Represents the River Authority in a professional manner with a customer-oriented demeanor and promotes appreciation of the river and natural resource stewardship.
Knowledge of various green infrastructure best management practices, including but not limited to green roofs, rainwater harvesting (cisterns, rain barrels), right-of-way bioswales, permeable pavement, rain gardens, stormwater tree pits, and infiltration planters.
Operates and maintains equipment such as: power tools (drills, grinders, etc.), hand tools (hoes, shovels, rakes, pruners, etc.), mowers, weed-eaters, tractors, vehicles, and other equipment commonly used for vegetative and slope maintenance.
Implements corrective actions as needed including irrigating, and/or applying herbicide, and pesticide or fertilizer
Identifies vegetation species and various stages of growth requiring attention to detail of a wide variety of native and non-native plant species
Operates and maintains PTO (Power Take Off) and motor driven pumps, traveling irrigation equipment, and other similar agricultural equipment for supplemental watering.
Installs and repairs irrigation systems and basic maintenance of wireless and stationary irrigation control box.
Manually loads trucks with sand, gravel, or waste material.
Responsible for the careful and proper use of equipment and materials assigned.
Responds to emergencies and performs on-site repairs to equipment and structural improvements as needed.
Performs routine maintenance checks on equipment, vehicles, and structures.
All other duties as assigned.
A High School diploma or G.E.D. plus one (1) year of progressively responsible experience in the operation and maintenance of landscape or agricultural equipment; green infrastructure best management practices or a combination of experience and education that results in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is required.
A thorough knowledge of the green infrastructure systems; familiar with the following to include but not limited to: horticulture, forestry, landscape architecture, ecology, natural resource management, water resources, conservation, park management; ability to attain a Handlers Verification Card within six (6) months of employment; ability to demonstrate the knowledge of safe herbicide mixing and the ability to read and understand herbicide labels; familiarity with basic plant identification, best land management practices, chemical/pesticide application, agriculture and/or related fields; knowledge of safe boating practices and operation; ability to work independently; ability to swim; and computer proficiency in the current Microsoft Office package is required.
Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record.
Additional Salary Information: Minimum salary is $15 an hour depending on experience
